Durban-based Mountain bike cyclist Alan Hatherley has become the first South African to win an Olympic medal in the mountain bike cycle race in the Paris 2024 games.

Based in Hillcrest, Alan has been a strong contender on the international mountain bike circuit for much of his career. His acheivement in paris is not just the realisation of his dream of becoming an Olympic medalist, but puts him ahead of any other South African cyclist since 1956, and, makes him the first ever South African to win an Olympic medal in the mountain bike division of Olympic cycling competition.

Monday’s race was a close call as the top three riders jostled for position through the cross country course that left little room for error as Hatherly and his fellow cyclist raced for position. Britain’s Thomas Pidcock took the Gold medal with the silver being taken by Frenchman Victor Koretzky.
