The revamp of the Moses Mabhida Stadium originally built for the Soccer World Cup will shine brightly as a leading attraction for visitors on completion of the R236 million upgrade currently underway.

As part of his 100 days in office address, the city’s mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba made a site visit accompanied by dignitaries and the media who were led around the facility by the German and South African engineering team tasked with the job of upgrading the stadium to ensure it rises to the challenge of competing with the most iconic stadia and buildings around the world.

Besides some minor structural maintenance, the team explained the majority of work focuses on upgrades to existing tourist attractions which have proved powerful drawcards for visitors to the stadium, and the addition of some exciting new points of interest, not least of which the iconic stadium arch and bowl is to be treated to colour themed lighting options creating a fantasia of visual lighting effects that will be seen across the city.

The much-anticipated Sky car revamp includes a new high-tech cabin which take visitors to the top via a new docking station where they can take in the Durban skyline from a revamped 360 degree viewing platform complete with glass walls, and for those willing to take that brave step, a cantilevered “Air Walk” experience glass floor. The viewing platform area will be increased by 60% to allow for more visitors, and the whole experience will be made accessible for disabled persons.

For the even more adventurous visitor the famous ‘Big Swing’ will be improved with an easier access launch platform. Additional attractions of a Zip line landing at People’s Park, a Compression Ring Walk and the option of a Sea Facing Bungee Jump should satisfy the adrenaline junkies who want to take in the Durban vistas in more dramatic fashion.

With its already iconic arch stretching over the horizon these upgrades will rejuvenate the whole Moses Mabhida precinct, encouraging business development and drawing crowds once again to experience inspirational city views, exciting recreational experiences and major sporting and cultural events.
