Woza Moya, the economic empowerment project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust is running workshops based on the theme The Ocean to grow the local skill base. The aim is to teach a range of new skills as well as improve on current skills so that the ladies have more for us to market for them, bringing much needed funds into their homes.

Seen here are some of the ladies making cushion covers beautifully decorated with embroidery and beads in line with the theme.

Woza Moya will go on to bring in a new range of jewellery inspired by The Ocean including colourful corals, psychedelic fish and other sea life along with a beautiful range of shells.

They intend to also encourage other crafters to express the beauty of the ocean in their own ways. The final stage of these themematic events will be the culmination in a magnificent display of all kinds of artwork in the Woza Moya Upstairs Gallery.

The crafters skills are traditionally passed on from mother to daughters. One family of 8 beautiful young sisters, have been with Woza Moya from the start, 20 odd years ago. Doris Blose, the Matriarch of this family of 10 children and 15 grandchildren, is a strong and powerful woman with a gentle demeanour.

Doris, learned traditional beading from her late mother and was able to feed and educate her family (all children have their Matric/Grade 12) by selling her beadwork.

She in turn taught her children to bead from a young age and it became the sole source of income for this close-knit family.
